My name is Yekeen Oku Abdul-Maliq, a seasoned academic and finance professional with a deep-rooted passion for development finance. As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals, I have dedicated my career to exploring the intricacies of banking and finance, aiming to drive economic growth and development, particularly within emerging economies.
I embarked on my academic journey at Ahmadu Bello University, where I obtained a B.Sc. in Business Administration (Finance) in 1983. My pursuit of knowledge led me to the University of Ibadan, where I earned an M.Sc. in Banking and Finance in 1999. I further enhanced my expertise with another M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Banking and Finance from the University of Nigeria, completed in 2013 and 2018, respectively.
My professional career began at Kosemani Enterprises Ltd as an Account and Admin Manager, followed by roles at Ali Omeiza Construction Company and Afribank Nig. PLC, where I gained extensive experience in research, training, and branch operations. Transitioning to academia, I served at Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa before joining the University of Abuja in 2006, where I currently hold the position of Senior Lecturer in the Banking and Finance Department.
Throughout my tenure, I have had the privilege of teaching a wide array of courses, from undergraduate classes in Mathematics for Accounting to postgraduate courses in Advanced Quantitative Techniques. My teaching philosophy centers on equipping students with practical knowledge and skills that are essential for navigating the complex financial landscape.
I have also supervised numerous research works, guiding both undergraduate and postgraduate students in their academic endeavors. My research interests include entrepreneurship education, financial system development, and the impact of banking sector reforms on economic performance. These interests have culminated in several publications in esteemed journals, as well as contributions to books and conference papers.
In addition to my academic and professional pursuits, I am actively involved in community service and administrative roles. I have served as the President General of the Ebira Community Secondary School Old Student Association, a promoter of the Uniabuja Microfinance Bank Ltd, and a member of various committees within the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. My commitment to education and finance is further demonstrated through my involvement in organizing and attending numerous conferences and workshops aimed at enhancing knowledge and professional development.
I have been honored with several awards throughout my career, including the TET-FUND Research Grant on Poverty Intractability in Nigeria and the Afribank M.Sc. Scholarship. These accolades reflect my dedication to contributing meaningful research and insights to the field of finance.
In my leisure time, I enjoy reading, writing, and traveling, which provide me with fresh perspectives and inspiration for my work. My journey in the world of banking and finance has been both challenging and rewarding, and I remain committed to fostering economic growth and development through education and research.
